In Chicago’s scorching hot West Loop neighborhood where everything is on the bleeding edge of hip, the new Soho House Chicago has emerged as the go-to destination for creative travelers. If you’re detecting a note of sarcasm it’s only because I have never been considered an authority on the subject of coolness. By anyone. That’s why I was surprised when I found the stylish hotel rooms at the Soho House so appealing that I began to wonder if I could bring the look home to the guest bedroom of my 100-year old, decidedly un-hip, North Shore home. The Soho’s house rooms offer a cozy formula of moody paint colors; crisp white duvets accented with dark red accessories; and varied texture in curtains, rugs and upholstery. The tartan plaid rug and vintage (or at least vintage-inspired) elements hooked me on the look and sent me to the web for resources. It was easier than I expected to find what I needed to pull off a respectable version of the Soho House style. My guests agree it turned out pretty cool. Even for me.
Tips on pulling it off:
Deep Reds and Wood
The dark walls and white linens would seem stark without the warmth of wood (in the floors or furnishings) and dark reds. Textured fabrics like the red velvet and a bit of natural linen help warm up the color palette.
Vintage Finds
Add some leather-bound books and vintage furnishings to make the space feel created over time. Items that have a special meaning and tell your own story are perfect for adding character to a room. But…
Keep it Simple
Resist the urge to add too many accessories. Collecting vintage items and be fun and will add warmth and personality, but don’t let your space become busy or you’ll lose the soothing calmness of this style.
