Perched on the side of a draw overlooking a broad sweep of juniper and sage-covered foothills in Utah’s Summit County, this modern yet rustic cabin home captures the spirit of a nature-loving family from the Chicago area. The home’s exterior, crafted of natural shingle and locally-sourced stone, is designed to blend into the landscape creating a seamless link to the outdoors on both levels.
The owners, a family of skiers, built this house as a place to escape the flat winter landscape of the upper Midwest. Stepping through the entrance into the vaulted foyer and great room, the owners’ outdoor passions are immediately apparent. On the wall adjacent to the staircase, visitors are immediately greeted with a wall of artfully-displayed vintage skis. This detail that perfectly captures the owners’ personal style was the inspiration of Austin-based designer, Donna Figg. The owners requested a warm, casual design with plenty of natural elements. Figg delivered a design plan that includes rich reds and blues, warm neutrals, natural wood, and cozy furnishings.
The decor is described as a mountain cabin aesthetic with a nod to Nordic hygge. Warm shag rugs and deep sofas welcome the family home after a day on the slopes and the casual rough-hewn coffee table and tufted leather ottomans offer a spot to put up their feet in front of a roaring fire. Throughout the home, plenty of table and floor lamps provide reading light for each seat in the home. In the great room, lamps crafted from logs painted shining silver offer a surprisingly glamorous yet natural element along with a driftwood horse sculpture. Petrified stone is repeated throughout the home in bookends, coasters and decorative objects. The stacked-stone facing of the fireplace and western fir beams of the vaulted ceiling brings home a feeling of the native landscape just beyond the wall of windows. In the distance, the eastern slopes of Deer Valley ski resort and the Jornaelle are a backdrop for the winter sunset.
Beyond the great room, Figg created a grand yet casual dining room with a rustic table for ten. The leather dining chairs are backed in a plaid fabric, the owners’ favorite pattern. The kitchen features dark-stained quarter-sawn oak cabinets and a black leathered granite countertop complemented by stainless steel Viking appliances. A whimsical collection of vintage soda bottles is displayed on the upper shelves backed by hand-made ceramic subway tile and dark grout.
The first-floor main bedroom is a stylish oasis with an upholstered king bed covered in the most luxurious down comforter and hotel-quality linens. Figg, who has a particular genius for selecting decorative pillows and throws, really shows her skill in this space with oversized bed pillows and a large faux fur blanket at the foot of a bed that can be hard to leave for an early morning ski trip. The lamps in this room, the owner’s favorite, are mottled blue porcelain that subtly captures each accent color featured in the space.
The owners’ love of the color blue is featured in the lower-level family room with a cushy velvet-covered sofa and tufted upholstered ottoman. The color extends to the lower-level main bedroom and blends perfectly with the reclaimed wood and sculptural moose antlers above the bed. A third bedroom takes a sunnier turn in shades of ivory, gold and gray drawn from the Faribault blanket and textured drapery fabric. Finally, the bunk room, a favorite hang out for the children and their cousins, features Faribault Hudson blankets and impossibly cushy faux fur bean bag chairs.
The artwork throughout the home is simple and reflects the local landscape with mountain vistas, rustic barns and wildlife. The moose portrait is a family favorite.
