Some design firms manage to strike precisely the right balance for every project. That can be said of Commune Design’s take on this stunning Craftsman-style home in Marin County, California. The house itself is understated from the outside, melding perfectly with the landscape of towering oaks, cypress and a coveted water view. All those inspiring natural elements are captured in the home’s interior where old-growth redwood is the star of every space. The natural wood and grand stone fireplace create a calming, cozy feeling in the living room, almost as if you’ve stepped into the hollowed-out space inside one of California’s majestic sequoias. The furnishings are simple, inspired by mid-century classic styles.
Natural fiber rugs, casual fabrics, leather, more wood, and plenty of pillows give this space a treehouse feeling. The walls are relatively unadorned, keeping the focus on the wood paneling.
A corner reading nook with a built-in daybed is a perfect spot to curl up on a foggy day.
In the kitchen, the colors of nature are reflected in the dark green cabinets and the selection of pottery and tableware is displayed on the open shelves. Finishes are simple and the lighting is understated, once again allowing the wood to shine.
On the second floor, bedrooms are spare but warm and comfortable and filled with welcoming details.
